In 1931, W.H. Gispen introduced his first two sprung-steel chairs without back legs. The tubular steel frame is shaped to follow the curved line of the seat, giving a very distinctive character to this chair. The Gispen 201 is based on the same elegantly shaped frame as the 101 chair, but features black, slightly curved armrests of bakelite. Although the 201 was developed primarily with the conference room in mind, it is nowadays widely used as a dining chair. Back and seat are available with a fixed fabric covering or in 8 mm lacquered beech plywood.
